Former Tar Heels Amber Falcone and Erica LaGrow aren’t the only UNC alumnae who won medals at the FIL Women’s World Cup last week in Prague, Czech Republic. Fellow Tar Heel Katie Brooks played with the Canadian National Team and won a bronze medal, Canada’s first medal since its bronze medal performance in 1982.

Five North Carolina players have been named to the U.S. National Team for field hockey, announced recently by USA Field Hockey. Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Jesse Gey, Carrie Lingo and Amy Tran, all veteran members of the team, were selected for the 24-member 2009-10 squad. Additionally, two Tar Heels - Melanie Brill and Jackie Kintzer - were named to the 16-member Developmental Team for 2009-10.

Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.) scored 15 points and Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) added 12 to go with nine boards as the 2009 USA Men’s World University Games Team (2-1) earned a 67-63 hard-fought defensive battle over Russia (1-2) in the 2009 Serbia International Invitational on Monday night in Belgrade.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Danielle Spaulding was crowned an NCAA Statistical Champion for strikeouts per seven innings in 2009. Spaulidng led all of Division I pitchers with 14.3 strikeouts per seven innings, fanning 338 batters in only 165.3 innings pitched while recording a 20-4 record. Awards are familiar to the Rancho Cucamonga, CA native, as she was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year in 2009 for the second straight season and NFCA All-America Third Team.

Jan Mann, a former Atlantic Coast Conference head coach and well-respected individual in collegiate women’s golf, has become the next women’s golf coach at the University of North Carolina. Mann, a proven and experienced head coach, will be the third head coach in Carolina history as announced by Director of Athletics Dick Baddour in March.

The University of North Carolina wrestling squad will face a challenging schedule in 2009-10 with the hopes of building another deep, talented team for the end-of-season Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA championships. The Tar Heels open the season Nov. 7 at the NC State Open in Raleigh, and will wrestle in Chapel Hill on three occasions while renovations continue at Carmichael Auditorium.

The Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce the 2009 Class of Inductees which includes former UNC All-America goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, also a past starter on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, as well as former UNC men’s tennis coach Allen Morris who led the Tar Heel program from 1980-93. The class will be inducted at the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on Monday, September 21, 2009 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
