Kirk Urso, a sophomore midfielder on the University of North Carolina men’s soccer team, secured a spot on the 2009 All-ACC Academic Men’s Soccer Team as announced recently by Commissioner John Swofford. Urso started all 22 games in 2009 as the Tar Heels advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Lombard, Ill. native was tied for third on the team in scoring with 14 points. He scored four goals and led UNC in assists wth six. Overall the Tar Heels finished 16-2-4 in 2009.

Seven high school seniors and Santa Clara transfer Jalil Anibaba highlight another top-notch recruiting class for the Carolina men’s soccer program as announced Sunday by veteran UNC head coach Elmar Bolowich. The Tar Heels add a total of eight new players to its already stellar roster, which returns eight starters that helped lead the Tar Heels into the past two NCAA College Cups. The Tar Heels will return their top six scorers for the 2010 season, but they also lost two starting defenders to the 2010 MLS Draft.

When a pair of Tar Heel senior defenders were chosen in the 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft January 14 it should have come as no surprise. During the 2009 season, seniors Zach Loyd and Jordan Graye were the key starters on a depleted Carolina defensive unit which allowed only 12 goals as head coach Elmar Bolowich’s team made a successful run to a second straight College Cup appearance. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, Bolowich has built a program that is among the elite in the college ranks and this past year Carolina’s smothering defense led the way.

University of North Carolina senior men’s defender will be playing his professional soccer as close to his hometown as possible as the Verdigris, Okla. native was the fifth player chosen in the 2009 Major League Soccer Super Draft conducted Thursday in Philadelphia. Loyd, a consensus All-America pick as a senior, was drafted by FC Dallas of MLS. Meanwhile, Loyd’s senior teammate, defender Jordan Graye, was taken in the fourth round by DC United.

The University of North Carolina men’s soccer team will play a five-match exhibition schedule this spring as announced Wednesday by UNC head coach Elmar Bolowich. The Tar Heels will commence their spring schedule against the Philadelphia Union, a 2010 expansion franchise in Major League Soccer on February 13 at 7 p.m. in Greensboro.
