UNC Honors Standout Student-Athletes

North Carolina student-athletes who are 2011-12 recipients of two prestigious honors – Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athletes and Tar Heel Leaders of Distinction – were recognized Thursday during halftime of the UNC men’s basketball team’s win over visiting NC State at the Dean E. Smith Center.

Urso Tabbed By Columbus Crew In MLS Supplemental Draft

Senior midfielder and Tar Heel captain Kirk Urso was picked 10th overall by the Columbus Crew Tuesday in the MLS Supplemental Draft. Urso became the fourth Tar Heel to be picked to join the ranks of the MLS as Matt Hedges and Enzo Martinez were selected in the first round of the MLS Draft on Friday, while Ben Speas signed a homegrown deal with Columbus last week.

Negalha Named NSCAA Assistant Of The Year

North Carolina men’s soccer assistant coach Jeff Negalha was honored with the Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Senior College Assistant Coach of the Year Award Friday night at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and its annual convention in Kansas City, Mo. Negalha helped lead the Tar Heels to their second-ever national championship in 2011.

Pair Of Tar Heels Taken In MLS SuperDraft

Senior defender Matt Hedges and junior midfielder Enzo Martinez were both selected in the first round of 2012 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday in Kansas City, Mo. Hedges and Martinez become the 10th and 11th Tar Heels to be picked in the MLS SuperDraft First Round since the inaugural draft of 1996.

Speas Signs With Columbus Crew

Junior forward Ben Speas officially became a member of the Columbus Crew on Wednesday when the Stow, Ohio, native signed a homegrown contract. Speas helped lead the Tar Heels to the 2011 NCAA National Championship and was named Soccer America’s National Player of the Year for his play as a Tar Heel.

Trio Close Out Action At MLS Combine

Three Tar Heels wrapped up action at the 2012 MLS Combine on Tuesday after the five-day event in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Seniors Matt Hedges and Kirk Urso along with Generation adidas signee Enzo Martinez all participated in the combine prior to Thursday’s MLS SuperDraft. The SuperDraft will be televised live on ESPN2 at 12 noon ET.

Bolowich To Be Inducted Into NC Soccer Hall Of Fame
