Tar Heels Amber Brooks and Courtney Jones have been called into the U20 National Team Training Camp beginning next week. The U-20 team will play against two Women’s Professional Soccer clubs.

North Carolina senior defender Whitney Engen has been named the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s ACC All-Academic team, as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.

There were so many twists and turns in the University of North Carolina’s journey to the 2009 NCAA women’s soccer championship that when I sat down to write this column my head was literally racing at the thought of the sheer number of angles I could take in telling the tale. Writing a column of tribute to the women’s soccer program has been an annual endeavor for me on TarHeelBlue.com. It is a labor of love. But this year, I was genuinely puzzled as to which direction to pursue.

Following a 20-day training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has named a 19-player roster for the 2010 Algarve Cup in Portugal. The 19-woman roster includes a quintet of former Tar Heel players – Heather O’Reilly, Catherine Reddick Whitehill, Casey Nogueira, Yael Averbuch and Tobin Heath.

The North Carolina field hockey and women’s soccer teams celebrated their 2009 national titles on Friday with a visit to the Governor’s Mansion. Bev Perdue, North Carolina’s first female governor, hosted a reception for the teams and spoke to the student-athlete and coaches about the impact they can – and do – have on children, and girls in particular.
