The University of North Carolina men’s swimming and diving program will send eight swimmers to the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships scheduled for March 25-27 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Redshirt junior Chip Peterson, juniors Joe Kinderwater, Tyler Harris and Tommy Wyher, sophomores Steve Cebertowicz, Wil Singley and Evan Reed and freshman Tom Luchsinger have all earned bids. Wyher has earned the Championships’ No. 1 seed in the 100-yard butterfly.

Seven University of North Carolina women swimmers have qualified for the 2010 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana scheduled for March 18-20. Juniors Katura Harvey and Rebecca Kane, sophomores Layne Brodie, Sarah Tanner and Laura Moriarty, and freshmen Carly Smith and Katie Nolan all qualified for the championship meet.

Tommy Wyher won two individual titles and led UNC to a relay win and second-place team finish at the ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for Feb. 22-28, 2010. The junior from New Port Richey, Fla., led the Tar Heels to a win in the 200-yard medley relay for the first time in 13 years and helped the UNC men record their highest point total at the ACC Championships in a decade with 656.5 points.

Junior Chip Peterson’s title-winning swim in the 1650-yard freestyle highlighted the Tar Heel men’s swimming and diving team’s effort Saturday night at the final session of the 2010 ACC Championships at Koury Natatorium. Joe Kinderwater in the 1650-yard freestyle, Tommy Wyher in the 200-yard backstroke, Steve Cebertowicz in the 100-yard freestyle, Tyler Harris in the 200-yard breaststroke, Tom Luchsinger in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay all had second-place finishes to power a strong night of swimming for the Tar Heels.

The Tar Heel men’s swimmers and divers were led by two record-breaking first-place finishes by junior Tommy Wyher in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke Friday night in the 2010 ACC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships at Koury Natatorium. UNC had another strong day, maintaining their second-place standing after day three of the championship meet with 449.5 points. The University of Virginia remains in first place with 554.5 points. Florida State University is in third with 369 points
