Lost in the emotional burgoo of Mark Paschal’s career ending injury last week was the story of the man who’d replace him. Chase Rice–senior linebacker, country music and NASCAR fan, former starter who missed all of 2007 after an opening-game injury. Rice took the field Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham with the words DAD etched in bold black letters on the white adhesive tape adorning each of his wrists.

Iman McFarland rebounded her own miss and scored with 11 seconds remaining to help No. 2 North Carolina hold off Oregon State, 82-78, Saturday night at St. Georges High School in the championship game of the Junkanoo Jam. McFarland finished with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and joined MVP Jessica Breland on the all-tournament team.

Three Olympic gold medalists and a past winner highlight the 15 players who have been named semifinalists for the women’s 2008 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy. The list of 15 semifinalists include a trio of Tar Heel standouts who are headed for next weekend’s College Cup in Cary, N.C. Senior midfielder Yael Averbuch, the third-place finisher in 2006, is joined by junior forward Casey Nogueira and junior midfielder Tobin Heath as semifinalists.
