Jolly Named To Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

North Carolina offensive lineman Kyle Jolly is among a hard-working and committed group of college football players will take the field this fall knowing that the impact they have on their teams and communities has nothing to do with touchdowns, tackles or receptions. For a second consecutive year, Allstate Insurance Company has partnered with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) to announce the list of 106 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team((R)), which honors college football players who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.

Shegog, Team USA Move Into Semifinals

After trailing by eight points late in the first half, the 2009 USA U19 World Championship Team (6-1) came back to earn an 88-75 victory over France (3-4) on Friday afternoon in Bangkok, Thailand. Four of the USA’s starters scored in double digits, led by USA team co-captains Skylar Diggins (Washington H.S. / South Bend, Ind.) and Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford / Cypress, Texas), who paved the way with 16 points apiece. North Carolina sophomore Chay Shegog and six points and four rebounds, Kelsey Bone (Dulles H.S. /Stafford, Texas) added 12 points and Shenise Johnson (Miami, Fla. / Henrietta, N.Y.) scored 10 points. Samantha Prahalis (Ohio State / Dix Hills, N.Y.) dished out seven assists.

Tar Heels Place Three On Preseason All-ACC Squad

North Carolina defensive standouts Marvin Austin, Kendric Burney and Quan Sturdivant were among the 24 players named to the preseason All-ACC football team Monday. Media members attending the 2009 ACC Football Kickoff at the Grandover Resort cast 44 ballots for the teams.

Tar Heels Add Morin To Incoming Class

The University of North Carolina added to its crop of incoming freshmen this month when it signed Overland Park, Kan., right-hander Michael Morin to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Mike Fox announced Thursday.

UNC’s Nogueira Named 2008-09 ACC Female Athlete Of The Year

North Carolina’s Casey Nogueira, who led her Tar Heel women’s soccer team to a national title while earning national player of the year honors, and NC State golfer Matt Hill, the 2009 NCAA individual champion, and are the 2008-09 Atlantic Coast Conference Female and Male Athletes of the Year. Nogueira is recipient of the Mary Garber Award, named for the former Winston-Salem Journal reporter and a pioneer for women in the field of sports journalism. That award was established in 1990 to honor the league’s top female athlete.
