The problem was that there simply weren’t enough seats for spectators interested in watching the Carolina-Virginia football game each fall. Duke? There was a 28-year lag a century ago when the Tar Heels and Blue Devils didn’t play one another. N.C. State? Carolina pounded the Aggies, as State’s athletic teams were known in the early days, 204-to-zip over six games in the late 1800s, so there was no point scheduling that comedy again for some time.

Don’t miss your first chance to see the 2009-10 University of North Carolina men’s and women’s basketball teams at Late Night with Roy 2009, to be held on Friday, October 16th in the Dean E. Smith Center following the 5 p.m. Carolina volleyball game versus Duke. Admission is free with general admission seating. Doors at the Smith Center will open at 4 p.m.

The University of North Carolina volleyball team is 5-8 overall and 1-1 in league play entering the month of October. The Tar Heels defeated Clemson 3-0 last Friday and lost 3-0 to Georgia Tech last Sunday, both on the road. Carolina is set to host its first two home conference games this week against Maryland at 7:00 p.m. Thursday and Boston College at 7:00 p.m. Friday.

Tyler Zeller was off to a terrific start before suffering a broken wrist against Kentucky last season. After working his way back to play limited minutes at the end of last year, his play this summer has reminded teammates and former Tar Heels of the high potential of the seven-foot Indiana native.

After being shut out for the first time this season last time out, No. 5 North Carolina found its offensive groove early Tuesday, scoring twice in the first 22 minutes en route a 2-0 win over Radford at Cupp Stadium. Billy Schuler scored in the eighth minute, and Michael Farfan extended the lead in the 21st minute, as the Tar Heels (6-1-1) built a first-half advantage they would not relinquish.
